France 2025 – 50 years of Tour de France arrival on the Champs-Elysées
Weight: 13 grams — ø: 31 mm — Silver: 333/1000
The Tour de France is the most renowned cycling race in the world.
It was first organized in 1903 by the newspaper L’Auto, aiming to boost its readership and, above all, to outshine its competitor Le Vélo. Today, it is the third most-watched sporting event in the world, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
However, the Tour de France did not always finish on the Champs-Élysées! This spectacular finale dates back to 1975, thanks to journalist Yves Mourousi, who reportedly contacted Valéry Giscard d’Estaing directly to propose the idea. Under the applause of 1.5 million spectators, Frenchman Bernard Thévenet was crowned the winner of the 1975 Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées. This now-iconic stage has made the Champs-Élysées a legendary venue for competition and celebration, forever engraved in sports history.
On the obverse of this coin, a Tour de France cyclist is depicted with a raised fist in a victorious gesture. Behind him stands the symbol of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées: the Arc de Triomphe. To the left, a vintage cyclist is illustrated in a wireframe style, referencing the participants of the 1975 Tour de France. The edge of the coin and the spokes resemble a bicycle wheel. The Tour de France logo is on the right, the year is on the left, and the mint marks are inscribed within the inner tube.
